Queenie was my last read of 2020 and while I can’t believe it took me so long to read I’m glad I finished the year on such a high! I can whole heartily say I understand the hype around the book, it was heart-breaking, funny, and all the emotions in between while being so realistic, I felt I was reading my friends diary at points.
As expected this book follows Queenie as she navigates her life, as the book begins she is in the midst of a breakup (that isn’t really a breakup?) From her boyfriend of three years and is trying to figure out what this means for her life. She’s also been facing some “women’s problems” and we see the impact these have on her alone.
Throughout the book there are flashbacks to Queenies life before the breakup or as a child and, while I found these confusing at the beginning as i got more into the book I really liked this approach and felt it added so much to the story.
It’s really hard to discuss more of the storyline without giving it away and so feel the other other thing I have to add is that I love the females represented in this book, although perhaps not conventional I think it’s what every girl should aim to surround herself with. The story left me feeling empowered and with a belief in myself. It also gave me hope, something I was lacking a lot following the continuing COVID news.
As you can probably tell from my previous reviews I navigate towards children’s books or women’s romance fiction, this book would fall into neither of these categories yet I loved it. I urge you to give it a chance, even if you think it’s ‘not for you’!
***Note tw in this book for physical abuse, emotional abuse, rape, miscarriage
What book is your MUST READ, let me know! I haven’t read any AMAZING books yet this year and I would love to change that!
